Today marks the beginning of my second week of my new job hunt. I lean towards skeptic pessimism in general. In commiseration, many friends have been very helpful.
Consider Nielson, a dear friend who clearly the move to Wisconsin a few years back has taken its toll. He has decided that emphasis should be placed on the second word in the phrase, leaving conversations full of references to the wild animals who populate the Serengeti.
It all began with "Yo, what is up, oh hunter of jobs? Have you felled a mighty beast on the Serengeti?" And then morphed into "Well, it is difficult to hunt jobs on the massive savannah. Sometimes you need a guide and a pointier stick."
When it ventured into "Slay the mighty job, and bring it home to your husband!" I had to inquire into his sanity. His only explanation was "Yes, I'm going with the Serengeti thing, because it makes the process more bearable. Just think about it, what is more fun - running around the Serengeti hunting something, or...job searching."
This was followed by scenic views of gazelles bounding in the Serengeti plains:
First came this.
Then this.
And then he sent this.
Needless to say, my job hunting paradigm has shifted.
Later on, I shared the last picture with S. She apparently drank the cheetah cool-aid and is now encouraging me with: "Go bite those jugulars of the job apps!" And thus the paradigm shift ventures toward tectonic.
Last but now least came Lady A. This was a nice change of pace, since the feel of the Serengeti is not well transmitted without visual aids. And thus we had a normal, encouraging conversation in which people say normal, encouraging things like, "I see something in your future, don't worry!"
It eventually, as 'more than a few screws loose' seems to be a requirement for friendship with me, my momentary soothsayer saw a clearer vision: "I see a small foot in your future. So you'll either get pregnant or coach soccer. Midget soccer."
I guess it's not too bad of a start to Week Two. After all, I now have two possible career changes in mind.
author's note: On a more serious note, super thanks to the people who have been helping. You know who you are, my cover letter editing, name finding, encouraging folks!
