Button Mashing

The Otter is getting pretty vocal.  She started to laugh, and though it sounded like a miner's cough at first, it's slowly morphed into hiccuped giggles.  She loves to chat with us about whatever comes to mind, especially her thoughts on every story we read to her.  While she is likely oblivious to the lack of meaning in her sounds, Man and I have gotten a pretty good grasp of what she's trying to say.

The cooing chatter is often: "This is fun!  Read/sing to me more!"

The baby giggles usually express either: "My parents. So weird, so funny." or "Flying! Such excitement!"

The fussing grunts demand: "Diaper change, please."

And there is, of course: "Why are you putting me down?  Hold me!!  Nooooooow!"  I'm pretty sure you know what that one sounds like.

Now, while we have a pretty good grasp of what the Otter is saying, we are still, as Man puts it, button mashing.  We know the rules of the game (feed and change diapers regularly, three naps a day and an 8pm bedtime), but haven't quite figured out all the winning combos.

Even when we do master one, the game regularly changes.  It seems she learns a new move or a new noise every other day.  She's grabbing her toes, rolling on her side, and doing baby pushups.

She has also recently learned how to produce something akin to the velociraptors in Jurassic Park.  How such sweet cheeks can shriek so wretchedly is beyond us, but she can and she does.  Often.

When I first heard this joyful screech, I interrupted her and inquired, "Lovey, what is that noise?"  My only answer was a mischievous grin and more dino-sounds.

And in our attempts to calm her vocal chords, we find ourselves back to button mashing..
