I now eat scallops. Yes, my once arch-nemesis has now become a common element in my diet.
Hon's mom claims that dried scallops have a very different flavor from fresh ones. Dried, they aren't as seafoody. (Or at least, that's the best translation we could get from "san yue.") I hate to tell her that this did not make me feel any bit better about the treacherous white globs that impersonate marshmallows.
All the same, Hon's parents are bent on breaking my life-long dislike of seafood. They have yet to realize that I have successfully resisted my own parent's attempts for 27 years now. Plus, I have made a great step forward: I now know the equivalent of "No, thank you" in Cantonese.
And to my great relief, there does not seem to be an equivalent of the Grossmann no-thank-you-helping in this household.
