For our two week jaunt on Parisian soil, Man and I decided to rent an apartment. About the same price as a hotel, but with the added amenities of a kitchen.
We loved it. Except for one thing.
Now, you might expect it to be the 150 some-odd stairs that we had to climb daily. But truth be told, we climbed those seven flights twice, on average, every day without [much] complaint. These fine, somewhat frighteningly slanted, stairs served us well. No matter the amount of buttery pastries consumed, we both lost two pounds on our trip.
Nor was it the awkward bathroom, cocooned in its dark oil-slick colored tiles. It had, as a google search has informed me, a waterfall faucet, a shower with 3.5 walls and a toilet that required the sitter to approach it diagonally if one wanted to protect the knees. This all was more amusing than bothersome. Though, it definitely influenced decorating choices...especially in what to avoid.
It also wasn't the dangerously low ceilings. Well, only one of us was in danger. Regardless, he did not, once, have a confrontation with the upper confine of our residence.
No, the problem with the apartment was the slight slope to...everything. Sober and awake, it was easy to ignore. However, after a glass or two of wine? Well, it definitely made things more interesting. My big struggle was with sleep. The bed had risers on two of the four feet to counteract the angle of the floorboards.
Whoever made the risers failed either math or shop class. The risers were not quite tall enough to fully level the bed. It is amazing how sensitive our bodies are to our surroundings. Even the slightest difference, be it a pea or a slope of 1 degree, can affect our ability to function.
Or maybe the bed was just jealous of the stairs and, seeing how great the stairs were for our lower halves, decided to try to help our upper halves by skewing our sense of balance.
