I ate a worm last night. I also bought a house, but at 5 am when sleep has left me, the moment with the worm seems more vivid and real.
I mean...really. I ate a worm.
After chewing on it for about five minutes, I asked what I was eating. (I really need to stop doing this.)
Man gave me a mumbled, "worm." Mama-in-law thankfully starts saying they are inedible--though not because of their wormyness, but because they were sandy. With this permission, my second worm went promptly into Man's bowl since he was happily munching on his.
The Old Man as usual ignores all of us, including my actual question, and explains "two fit-ty" before going back to his own worm soup.
I can only presume that he means $250 and not two dollars and some change.
When I applied for college, I wrote one of my two entrance essays on how much I hated worms. With great maturity, I started with "Worms? Ew, gross!" (Which managed to stay after the twenty-odd edits because my dad said it was a great hook.) The story continues about my ability to overcome my great dislike of these tubes of squishable slime when I volunteered at a local nature center that had a vermiculture composte bin. Having to teach about worms meant having to pick them up. I ended with a story proving my great poise when a mom insisted that I give her two year old a worm--which, unsurprisingly, ended up flung back at me once the girl realized how truly disgusting worms feel.
I can picture all of my admissions readers nodding in agreement with me anyway, saying "Knowing how gross worms are is a clear sign of intelligence. We need this girl at our school." I got in.
10 years later? Whoops, I ate a worm.
Ew. Gross.
is it really a worm or the fungi that looks like a worm (cordyceps)? the latter is rather chewy.
ReplyDeleteYou'd have to ask Man that question. It is possible that they were worm-like mushrooms, but I would also not put it past the Old Man who claims to have also fed Man dog meat at some point in time.... ~.~
