Slanty eyes

Over the last few weeks, I have taken to jokingly calling Hon 'slanty eyes' or 'squinty eyes'.  It comes out of a loving irony, as Hon typically has some of the largest eyes I know, Asian or not. However, it's somewhat fitting at moments when he's about to fall asleep while reading for class or when he's just woken up.  In these [quite extended] moments between wakefulness and slumber, Hon's eyes shrink to are-your-eyes-really-open? proportions.  Hon keeps hoping I'll refer to him as "beady little eyes", but alas, he does not quite have the intensity to qualify for that without coffee or a few hours to process being awake.

Now, I'm admitting to my semi racist nickname for Hon because it sets the stage for the perfectly timed comment by his mom.

"Hon, your eyes getting smaller?"

Hon and I caught each others' eyes. I burst into laughter as Hon tried his best to look serious and oblivious to me.  He failed.

Mom and I decided together that it's caused by starting at a computer screen for eight or more hours a day.  Hon threatened to quit his job and grad program.

I guess squinty eyes are a small price to pay for a decent job.
