Philly style

I was heading to the El after work and happened to reach the door just as a man was struggling through with a stroller full of miscellany and milk creates.  Having been raised by something other than cavemen, I grabbed the door and held it open so he could maneuver his wheels.

He smiles, says, "Thanks, gorgeous."  An uncommon politeness that I appreciated briefly until the ubiquitous up and down eye movement followed and negated all its charm.

However, one compliment and a visual assessment does not suffice here in the city of brotherly love. So he immediately adds, "My wife says you're beautiful."

The additional adulation would have been a little less circumspect if the woman following him through the door had added any sort of mumbled comment to the so far one-sided conversation.  Or even seemed remotely connected to him.

What can I say?  There is nothing so classy as the approach of a Philly resident, who may or may not have much to offer in financial or hygienic realms; At least he has compliments galore.
