Engagement shots

So here's the deal: 95% of the engagement shots I've seen fall into the "beautiful but not something Hon and I would do" category. They might be too romantic, too vintage, too perfectly beautiful, too serious, etc. So the question is: Where do we go to get shots that hint to us as a couple?

My first (brilliant) idea: the Camden Aquarium. How cool would pictures be, standing next to the glowing jellyfish tank? Or watching the hippos climb up near the glass walls as they eat the bok choy and kale tossed their way? (yes, they do eat that!)

Hon's thoughts: Baking. It's how we formed our friendship, it's what we love to do. Banter bubbles up as I stick to the recipes I grew up on and Hon decides to experiment (ruin things, if you ask me) by adding in random ingredients.

These don't really seem like normal engagement shot places, so we added the Italian Market/Termini's bakery. I love this area. Hon grew up here. And it fits what you see on so many wedding photography websites.

I know these all could make for pretty spectacular photos. But I have to admit I felt a little sad when the photographer picked the Italian Market. I don't blame her, it's a great place full of wonderful colors. The problem is that it's not quite...us. So today is the day that I put my foot down (with very polite manners, mind you) and become a little bit more insistent on what I want. And now I have feedback on all options, so I must decided: Do we...

1. ...deal with the crowds and the glass at the Aquarium to get shots with the hippos? (though I have to check if we are allowed to do it)
2. ...dress up my kitchen (which is awfully bland right now) so that Hon and I can bake there?
3. ...go with the beautiful, but typical (and easier on everyone's part) pick of the Italian Market?

  1. I like the idea of the baking. Maybe you can fake it by seeing if you can "borrow" someone else's nicer kitchen to shoot in. I think there would be some great spontaneous laughter images there and is more authentic.

  2. you should do what you want! if you aren't too crazy about the italian market then don't do it. i think the aquarium is a great idea, but yea...you have to find out whether they allow photography or now...especially if u can't do flash photography then that'd be hard.
