Last Name

I spent the morning shoe shopping with my old roommate, the new Mrs. Leung-Taveras (shoot is it Taveras-Leung?). As we talked about wedding stuff and her excitement for Hon and I, she threw out a curve ball:
Are you going to take his name?

I had just assumed so, but I hadn't really thought about it. I didn't even realize how many options there were.. Do I keep my last name as my middle name? Do I need to keep my last name? Does he want me to take his name? (Though, knowing him, it's likely that he doesn't care one way or another.) Do I hyphenate?
Do you want people calling you Mrs. Lui?

I don't think I care. Luckily for me, my future mother-in-law is pretty cool and I don't mind sharing a name with her. (I say this as if I've ever heard anyone call her Mrs. Lui.) At least I know that I don't want to hyphenate. So the only question remains: Do I keep my last name and tuck it into 'middle name' status or do I leave that sucker at the aisle as I walk away Mrs. Hon Lui?

I guess I have a few months to decided, huh? Until then, here's a funny thought:
"I'd rather people all me Mrs T. I'm not Mrs. Taveras... that's Alvin's mom!"

Anyone else picture a small Chinese woman with a wife beater, faux-hawk and huge gold chains?? :)

  2. I approve of MOL. But then you'd have to teach chemistry. And your name would be weird to hyphen because it already looks like a compound.
I think when my day comes, I've decided to hyphen, my name first, mostly because I really like my last name and Kathryn Nguyen gets all swallowed up. And if I ever become a professor, people can call me Dr. Lu-Nu for short. :)
