Last weekend, part of dinner was a can of sardines. Not just a can of sardines, but sardines in tomato sauce.
I made a face as soon as I saw it.
"'maycan culture," Hon's dad assured me. "Mm hai," I replied.
"Yea. This is 'maycan." He jabs a finger at the can of sardines. "You make this."
"Oh no. That is not American culture." I am adamant. I have never even seen a can of sardines outside of his house, let alone known any one who eats it.*
"No," he replies somewhat testily, "You don't know 'maycan culture." He is, apparently, more adamant about his sardines:
* I will admit that, having polled a fair number of friends and the men in the mission, I have discovered 2 people who will eat this if they don't have the time or money for a meal.
