American Culture

Hon's dad has the weirdest ideas about American culture.

Last weekend, part of dinner was a can of sardines.  Not just a can of sardines, but sardines in tomato sauce.

I made a face as soon as I saw it.

"'maycan culture," Hon's dad assured me.  "Mm hai," I replied.

"Yea.  This is 'maycan." He jabs a finger at the can of sardines.  "You make this."

"Oh no.  That is not American culture."  I am adamant.  I have never even seen a can of sardines outside of his house, let alone known any one who eats it.*

"No," he replies somewhat testily, "You don't know 'maycan culture."  He is, apparently, more adamant about his sardines:

Oh yes, American culture.

*  I will admit that, having polled a fair number of friends and the men in the mission, I have discovered 2 people who will eat this if they don't have the time or money for a meal.
